Crocodile Ghat is the place where sri sankaracharya took his consecrates of renunciation. To take up 'sanyasam', he needed his mother's permission. So, jagadguru sri sankaracharya, with his magical power, created a crocodile which caught hold of his leg. Then, he began to beg his mother to allow him to take sanyasm, upon which the crocodile might spare him. Aryamba granted permission to him to take deeksha and sankara was set free. The bathing ghat where this is believed to have happened, is situated just below the temple.
